Quirky Taobao: Dress like Peter Parker or Sheldon Cooper
By Ulice Goitte
E-commerce retailer Taobao offers the quirkiest geek and otaku fashion options at an affordable price.
Giant e-commerce platform Taobao is not shy of bizarre items tailored to the Chinese taste. Some of them are easier to understand than others. Many foreigners come to China and do not explore the darkest virtual corners of Taobao, with products that often make you wonder “Why?” which is my reaction every time I go “too deep in.” However there are also many wonderful products that one wouldn’t even think they exist, and that is why this time I am going to be your guide for a bizarre experience.
I asked Michael Bechari, a French expat that has been living in China for the past four years, about his weirdest purchase through the Taobao platform to which he replied:
"Well, I personally don’t think it is a “weird purchase” but most people would say so; one day I wanted to do very special uncommon omelet for dinner to fit with my extravaganza. I went straight to Taobao where I know you can find literally everything (maybe even a baby?) and I searched for peacock’s eggs, which I expectedly found! They arrived in a fancy wood package. Of course, this won’t be possible to be found by any means in my country except if I end up breeding peacocks in my own garden."
Hey Geeks, ready to suit up?
One of the most amazing things about China is the appreciation for western and Japanese pop culture, although the products are not the official merchandise of the movies and shows we all love, the quantity and quality quickly distract you from that little fact, but as soon as you see the price that is the moment when you forget about the whole issue-Unless you are one of those die-hard fans.
Have you ever wanted to dress up as your favorite movie and tv series characters? I am not talking about cosplay, I really mean just wearing the civilian outfits they wear. Well, in Taobao you’ll find several vendors that sell pop culture clothing. From Tv shows like Supernatural and The Flash to blockbusters like Deadpool and Justice league.
These outfits (Which range from 9 to 14$) were used by Tom Holland in his latest portrayal of Peter Paker in the 2017 movie Spiderman: Homecoming, as well as in the trailer for Avenger 4: Infinity War (2018)
Time for some sweaty heroism
Yes! I know what you are thinking you can buy a full-body suit and go patrol around the city (I do not condone illegal vigilantism, get yourself licensed) and as a matter of fact, yes you can. You can also buy superhero workout outfits, dress like Batman and do some squats.
If you think this is not enough to satisfy your”Amazing Fantasy” then you can also purchase the outfits of your favorite Japanese characters from anime and manga.
